Sailing there is wild, there is no land or shelter for a bit of rest. Only the South American continent’s tip lies between 40° and 50° south latitudes.įrom the Ocean Atlantic thru the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean’s vastness, the elements have time to grow, to live their lives without hindrances and do offer their worse face. There is indeed almost no land to bar the winds and seas. These areas that the virtual fleet is about to sail are not very welcoming. These words may sound a bit weird, Roaring Forties, Furious Fifties, and even Shrieking Sixties, but they leave no room for imagination for the landsmen as well as for the sailors. A navigation that, as the days go by, will bring the fleet from the Forties down to the Fifties. From now on, the pace of the long sailing days and the courses will be dictated by series of rushing low-pressure areas. Ahead lie 5,000 NM of almost virgin spaces, where only few deserted archipelagos and islands, like the Kergelen Islands to the South or St Paul and New Amsterdam to the North, mark out the route. The Indian Ocean is wide open in front of her stem. The end of the Atlantic Ocean is imminent for Agde, still well holding the lead of the 420,000 Virtual Vendée Globe’s players’ fleet.
